Introduction

In nothing is the doctrine of the survival of the fittest more aptly illustrated than in the bloody striving of animals to consume one another. It is almost impossible to imagine how cruel they can be until one has had a bear or pole-cat sink its teeth deep into one’s leg.  It clamps onto the flesh, clinging with utmost temerity, until one offers it something more palatable to grasp in its hateful mandibles. A lolly or packet of “fun-dip” is most useful for this purpose.
